JAZZ AMPS


In Jazz music, as in other styles like Rock or Heavy Metal, guitarist can use an amplifier to get better his own sound or to increase its volume in a band.

In contrast to another styles, jazz guitarist demands that his sound to be clean, to be listened in all its nuances. In other words, jazz guitarist use clean sounds, sometimes adding some effects as reverb or a light chorus. Here we bring a list of the most popular jazz amps:



-Roland Cube 60. Perhaps one of the most popular amps in jazz music. It´s a solid state amp, lightweight and versatile, that it´s no longer being manufactured. However, Roland build another similar amps in 15, 20, 30, 40 and 80 watts, today.


-Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus. A classic one, used by great guitarists as Pat Metheny o Pat Martino. It´s a solid state amp, some heavyweight, but charming with its eighties like look.

-Fender Blues Jr. A 15 watts amps, some noisly, but with a mellow valve sound.

-Fender Jazzmaster Ultralight (Altavoz+Cabezal). A very lightweight solid state amp, with a cool look.  
-Ibanez Wholetone WT80. A newcomer which has all that a jazz guitarist needs top lay in and out of his home and, in addition, for little money. It´s a solid state amp with reverb and chorus.
-Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Perhaps one of the most popular jazz amp, used by gitarists in all the world from the 90´s. It´s a lightweight tube amp that sound reasonably well.
-Peavey Classic 30. Another very popular tuve amp. As the Hot Rod, very handly and with a calid soud, but perhaps some noisly.
-Fender Twin Reverb. It´s also one of the most popular, with thousand of followers along the world. Wes Montgomery used its antecessor, the 65´Twin Reverb.
-Vox AC30. Although it´s actually a rock or pop amp made, may be used to play jazz but with its clean sounds. It´s John Scofield preferred amp one, although some people say that it breaking easy.
-ZT Amplifiers. It´s a new company which amps has a very good look and tone, and not seem very expensive.

Jazz music works through standards, a term which refers songs that every jazz musicians must know. Between them, Stella By Starlight is one of the most popular.

THE GUITAR CHOICE


The possibilities are unlimited when we talk about jazz. This includes the guitar choice. Firstable, the musician must seek out the more comfortable guitar for him, something that includes find out the best sound as been possible. The best option is to prove  every guitars in the market, but if this is not possible (a likely situation), a good alternative could be take a look at the musicians you admire. We bring you some of the most appreciates musicians of the jazz genre, and the instruments they played throughout their careers.


The guitar choice is the first step for a beginner.


Wes Montgomery (1923-1968). An indisputable genius of the jazz guitar, Wes always played big hollow body guitars like Gibson L-5 or ES-175. This guitars were among the first guitars which were electrified in the 20´s. As regards string, Wes used to utilize 0.14 gauge.


Jim Hall (1930-now). As Wes Montgomery, Hall use to utilize hollow body guitars. At the outset, he played a classic one Gibson ES-175, but now he´s often found on the stage with an elegant and smart Sadowsky of similar characteristics. In strings, he utilize a light 0.11 gauge.  

Pat Metheny (1954-now). Metheny´s guitars are hollow body guitars but, particularly, yellow colored. At the outset, he played usually with ES- 175 guitars, but a advertising contract with Ibanez made that now he only plays with that Japanese company models, also hollow bodied. He use 0.11 gauge strings.

John Scofield (1951-now). Unlike the previous guitarists, Scofield´s guitars are semi hollowed body guitars, Gibson ES.335 styled. That was in fact the guitar which Scofield plays during two decades, until he signed an advertising contract with Ibanez, like Metheny did. Now he plays Ibanez AS 200 signature models.

George Benson (1943-now). During his long and successful career, Benson has played a great number of instruments, all hollowed body made, at Montgomery´s style, prioritizing  Gibson L-5´s type, hollow body Guild guitars and, recently, Ibanez guitars with his sign a an expensive price.

Bireli Lagrene (1966-actualidad). Lagrene is the typical musician who likes experience. Along his career, have been seen with a lot of guitar models, from acoustic guitars made for gypsy jazz to hollow body or solid body models. That fact is, like his music, an example of his art spirit.


Pat Martino (1944-actualidad). Martino´s guitars are singular guitars, cool and stylish handmade instruments like himself. They are semi hollowed body made, somewhere in between a Les Paul and a E-175 guitar, constructed by Benedetto. The guitars are sold in different colors.
